Senior Electronic Product Design Engineer, Sensor & Instrumentation 📍 Coventry, UK | 💰 £80,000 - £85,000 | Permanent | New Role

The Opportunity

A globally operating manufacturer of precision sensor and instrumentation products is looking for a Senior Electronic Product Design Engineer to take full technical ownership of next-generation fluid sensing systems for some of the world's most demanding heavy vehicle and off-road applications.

This is a newly created role with real scope. You'll be leading a small development team while staying genuinely hands-on with the design work, owning products from first principles through to production launch. If you've spent your career taking sensor and instrumentation products from a blank sheet and you're ready to step into a leadership position, this is worth a conversation.

The products you'll be developing go into equipment built by the biggest names in construction, agriculture, mining and commercial vehicles. Sensing technologies include guided wave radar, capacitive sensing and ultrasonic measurement, deployed globally across some of the harshest operating environments on earth.

The Role

This is a product design role, not a systems integration role. You'll own the full development cycle from sensing architecture and analog electronics design through signal processing, validation and production launch. You'll lead and develop a small team of engineers, set technical direction and be the go-to authority on sensing and instrumentation within the business.

The expectation is that you can walk in, look at a capacitive or ultrasonic sensing system, and know exactly what needs to happen from physics to production. You'll have done it before, more than once, and you'll have the scars to prove it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end electronic product design of fluid sensing systems, from first principles through to validated production launch
  • Lead and develop a small team of development engineers while remaining technically hands-on
  • Set technical direction for sensing architecture, analog electronics and signal processing
  • Drive innovation in sensing methods and system robustness, solving complex first-principles challenges
  • Work within automotive-grade development processes including APQP, DFMEA and PFMEA from the ground up
  • Collaborate with global OEM customers and partners on integration, field validation and performance
  • Design for extreme environments including wide temperature ranges, high vibration, shock, EMI/EMC and chemical exposure

What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering
  • A solid track record of taking sensor or instrumentation products from concept through to production release, ideally more than once
  • Deep hands-on expertise in analog and mixed-signal circuit design at product level, not systems integration
  • Background in heavy vehicle, off-road, construction, agriculture, mining, commercial vehicle or industrial instrumentation sectors
  • Experience with sensing technologies such as capacitive, guided wave radar, ultrasonic or similar industrial instrumentation
  • Hands-on PCB design and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience designing electronics for harsh environments including temperature extremes, vibration, shock and EMI/EMC
  • Familiarity with automotive quality processes including APQP, DFMEA and PFMEA
  • Experience leading or mentoring a team of engineers
  • Embedded firmware (C/C++) and automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN) — desirable
  • IATF 16949 and ISO 26262 knowledge — desirable

What's On Offer

  • £80,000 - £85,000 per annum
  • 25 days holiday annually
  • Company pension scheme
  • Life assurance
  • Casual, energetic workplace
  • Global product impact across construction, agriculture, mining and commercial vehicle markets
